MoiRandall's Randwulf's Mandelion

Tabard

This costume was created for a character in NERO® Avendale, played by a friend of mine.  The character "Ramox" is a Chaos Lord and member of the nefarious Kabal, so I had a few goals when creating this costume.

I wanted something that was easily distinguished at night time (when this character is primarily played).  The articulated shoulders make a distinct silhouette even at night.  The fabric has an embossed vinyl pattern on it which catches the moonlight.  All embellishments were done with glitter fabric paints which also can catch the moonlight on a clear night.

I didn't want anything that would interfere with his fighting style or extend his target area.  The only extensions to the front and top of the pattern are in his well guarded chest and upper shoulder area.  The roping through the front at the waist keeps the tabard securely on him during combat.

I sewed the tabard in blue denim that was embossed with a black vinyl pattern, lined with navy blue crepe.  The skull symbol is a blue cotton ironed on using Heat 'N Bond, then sewn around the edges which were then sealed with blue glitter fabric paint.  The outer seams of each shoulder plate were embellished with alternating blue and silver glitter fabric paint.  The tips of each talon on the front sides were embellished with blue glitter fabric paint.

Deviations from the pattern: This is actually a merging of two patterns with additional modifications.  The front piece was taken from McCalls 8937 Vest A, attached at the shoulders to the back piece, which was taken from Randwulf's Mandelion.  The front pattern piece was further modified (before cutting) with talon like extensions along the sides.  The same talon shape was used to create the overlapped shoulder plates, five on each side sewn over the shoulder to both the front and back sections.  Each shoulder plate talon was interfaced with Timtex interfacing™ (used for baseball hat brims) to ensure stiffness.

An example of the Randwulf's Mandelion pattern being used as originally intended can be found here.
